WORLDWIDE BABY

Worldwide Festival - South of France, 14th & 15th July (Live Review)

Arriving in Sète, a small fishing town in the South of France, about a 30 minute drive from Montpellier, we headed to the Amerik Club for the Vendredi soir happenings of the inaugural Worldwide Festival. Taking place over two days at two different venues — both idyllic

During an evening of DJs on rotation, we saw the local lads Garfld & Sundae, Simbad, Alex Barck from Jazzanova and the festival’s host/co-organiser Gilles Peterson, at times Earl Zinger aka Rob Gallagher vocally flexed in his enigmatic style. The venue was truly amazing, blue skies and sunshine over a club that’s also a bar/restaurant, with a dance floor framed by rocks, rock pools and the Mediterranean sea.
The stage had a little waterfall behind it that merged into the natural rocks, the blue sky above, the shimmering Rosé mirroring the colours in the Rickenbacker, and Tellier’s lean frame topped with tangled hair
Plenty of summer anthems popularised by radio shows such as Gilles Peterson’s own Radio 1 show, Worldwide, featured on this first night. Simbad impressed with his DJ technique and inevitably dropped his own ‘Fever’, Alex Jazzanova played some old and modern disco gems. Gilles Peterson DJed in his trademark eclectic switches, though also impressively beatmatching some house tracks for a while, he also commenced a period of about 30 minutes of drum & bass with DJ Hype’s ‘Super Sharp Shooter’, complete with full slow-intro and half paced drop. Simbad also contributed to this section of the night and played A Tribe of Issachar’s original 1996 version of ‘I’m a Junglist’. Digging this the crowd expressed their delight with Braps, Boos and two-finger salutes. When the night came to a close at about 6:30am, I had been entertained a great deal by the DJs and also by observing the sky change colour as the sun rose. The enclosed surroundings of an inner-city club cannot compare with this treat.
So to the Samedi and a long day, scheduled times from 14:30 - 06:00. We arrived back at the Amerik Club at about half 3 and missed Double U’s (Sonar Kollektiv) performance, but we had plenty of time to chill down on the rock pools. This was a highlight of the weekend, hot weather and plenty of people lying or sitting in the sun or swimming in the clear water. Only a hundred or so people were in the club at this time, so it felt very intimate with DJs, organisers and bands walking around doing the same as the punters. Ben Westbeech & band were the first act we saw. Their show was good but I was particularly impressed with the rhythm section, UVRay’s crisp drum sounds and when they raised the bpm to drum & bass tempo.
After more lounging in the heat and some DIY arranging of seats we settled. Sébastien Tellier along with Simon Dalmais took to the stage complete with bottle of Rosé, two full glasses. Simon played grand piano while Monsieur Tellier sung and played his red Rickenbacker guitar or micro Koog, then whilst Sébastien played piano for tracks such as the epic ‘La Ritourelle’, Simon would play on the Koog. The setting was beautiful, sweet music and a stunning visual composition.
The stage had a little waterfall behind it that merged into the natural rocks, the blue sky above, the shimmering Rosé mirroring the colours in the Rickenbacker, and Tellier’s lean frame topped with tangled hair.
For both performance style and appearance Monsieur Tellier’s was somewhere between Serge Gainsbourg and Kenny Everett. Whether in the opening song with a cigarette up his nose, gently stroking and kissing the monitors or when straddling the rope between stage and audience, he entertained immensely. Both Tellier and Simon Dalmais played the piano exquisitely and also generated some firing electro-synthed-sounds on the Micro Koog. The resonance of the grand piano and the renditions of ‘La Ritournelle’ and ‘Black Douleur’ were fantastic. Tellier’s mannerisms, facial expressions and timing had plenty of the audience laughing a lot (myself included). Perfect for the occasion, this was a real 10 out 10 show, and if the opportunity to watch Sébastien Tellier arises again I will grab it.
That concluded the Apres Midi fun and events continued at the other venue, Theatre de la Mer. Another phenomenal space, an old Amphitheatre surrounded with the Sea (similar to Minack in Cornwall). Having had an extended dinner, we missed DJ Vadim’s One Self project and half of Canadian piano-supremo Gonzales’ show. Initially we sat near the very top of the Amphitheatre, watching Gonzales play amusing and technically strong instrumental piano renditions of popular tunes, many of which the audience would sing. Including: ‘She’s A Maniac’ from Flashdance; BeeGees – ‘Night Fever’ and ‘How Deep is your Love’; Queen’s ‘Another one bites the Dust’; Lionel Richie’s ‘Hello’; and concluding with the “Irish Gospel”, U2’s ‘Where the Streets have no Name’. Gonzales rose from his hunched position over the keys and left the stage to massive applause.
Next up, Gilles Peterson came on and introduced (in French), “From Tokyo, Japan, Soil and Pimp Sessions”. On they came, dressed as enigmatically as always, ‘Worldwide’ and ‘Waltz for Goddess’ had me bopping about in my seat, but they didn’t seem to have the energy that’s been in abundance the previous two times I’ve seen them. Not all the crowd seemed to be feeling the show at this stage, was “Death Jazz” too much for folks whose jazz tastes are usually smoother? After ‘Waltz for Goddess’ we decided to head closer to the action we then became part of an extraordinary moment of ensemble spontaneity. 30 or so people fled their seats and positioned themselves on the dance floor area between the row of monitors and the front row of seating. We then spent the rest of the show dancing a couple of metres from the band and were treated to some amazing moments. The sax player Motoharu’s facial expressions were as rubbery and brilliant as usual, Akita’s double basslines were thumbing out and Josei was going wild on the keyboard. Shacho the ‘President’ and bandleader’s presence was essential too, conducting members through their own superb solos and mutual exchanges. A terrific moment occurred when, aided by the vocal crowd, Shacho perfected his pronunciation of Sète (sounds like set), “Seter? Seté? Sète!
When the show closed to a rapturous response, we walked the short distance round the corner back to Amerik Club for the night’s events. On rotation: Garfld & Sundae, Daz-i-Que, Alex Jazzanova. Real thumping club business went on all night; Studio 54 meets Plastic People in a luscious outdoor environment, a proper dance feast under the night sky. Sundae played tracks that sounding like Mr Fingers with a contemporary Paris/Berlin edge. Alex Jazzanova dropped more Disco/jazz-funk tracks and also some Sonar Kollectiv goodies, including ‘Boom Clicky Boom Klack’ and Eva B & Joe Dukie’s – ‘No Memory of Time’ (Reggae version). Daz-i-Que played a blinder firing out Bugz hits from their new album and also snuck in some Dancehall sounds as well as Omar’s ‘It’s So’ and Nina Sky’s ‘Move your Body’. Motet mc-ed and was joined by Ben Westbeech who sang a live version of ‘So Good Today’. The Samedi soir was really pumping with around 1000 people inside the small venue. When it all came to an abrupt end around 5:45, the inaugural Worldwide Festival had been a success with an excellent friendly international vibe. I plan to return next year.
Photos by Ben Verghese

Worldwide Festival reviewCurrently in Barcelona and fairly tired after a sensational weekend in Sete (Montpellier) at the Worldwide Festival. The others will write more informative reviews with pics when they get back but here´s the gist of what happened..Friday – set off first thing to Stansted. Saw Princess Consuela Banana Hammock in the queue. Did all the usual bits, I got fleeced by the bureau de change whilst she enjoyed herself at Accesorize!! Then momentary panic in the security hall as our hand luggage flashed red on the scanner, but it turned out to be just a phone that hadn´t been turned off. We were running late and it was frantic sprinting to the plane (John Cleese in "A fish called Wanda" style!) knocking down passengers, cleaners, a whole party of rabbis, in fact everybody in our path on the escalators in our stampede to the aircraft. We made it just and sat down next to a very nervous, stuttering Irish skinhead in the windowseat, who kept ordering beers and scratchcards from the ultra camp and very amusing Swedish steward on the aircraft.Montpellier was scorching hot. We made it to the centre easily enough (apparently you don´t pay fares on the trams there?) and then it was time for beers at the gare bar (a wonderfully relaxing place opposite the station) La Hammock decided to make a move to her campsite so I bid farewell whilst waiting for Muji, my room mate for the weekend and living Brownswood legend from what I´ve heard!Muji arrived on time from Geneva and with 2 very heavy cases we were struck by inspiration and decided to hunt around town on foot in the boiling heat for FNAC, the retail store which had our tickets, but of course, it was Bastille Day and, of course, everything was shut !So we gave up and got a train to Sete and then a taxi to the hotel.. Annoyance as we realised it wasn´t actually a hotel, rather a load of identikit self catering flats, where we actually had to PAY for the privilege of using their towels and TV remote controls. Muji was decidedly unimpressed. "Can´t you give us a different room with more light" she pleaded, but the staff were having none of it. We also found that the lock on the door was defective. A locksmoth was called but he just shrugged and blamed the salty sea air for rusting the locks. "They are all like zis, he said"!

The evening came and we went for a quick drink at the local bar before meeting the others at the festival. More momentary panic when I thought I´d lost my spanish railway ticket but it was ok. The bar was very much of the local variety. A man with a guitar was singing cover versions of tracks like "Michelle" – dubious voice but unmistakeable enthusiasm. Then the others (d_gubbins and the hammock) arrived in a cab to pick us up. Everybody was very excited about the festival and with good reason. Gilles + Alex Jazzanova + Sinbad + (ubiquitous) Earl Zinger were all on the line up and a riproaring crowdpleasing set was guaranteed. After arguing with the staff about our tickets, we eventually persauded them to let us in. The club was possibly the most stunning place I have ever been to. Located by the sea, it is sandwiched between what looked like an ancient fort at one end and the sea rocks with a cliff road trailing down to Sete town centre. The club itself had giant pools of water, decking everywhere and the dj booth in the middle, very accessible and all open air.We entered and the place was heaving. The music slowly moved up the gears, hiphop giving way to broken beats, drum´n´bass (oh the collective glee when "super sharp shooter" came on!) and then ultimately on to the serious house specials. Gilles P and Alex Jazzanova were just MAJESTIC, although the MCing did grate at times.. The others will have to help me out with the tracklisting. I can´t remember any of it!The club was packed and a few ´familiar´faces introduced themselves. "J´mirie" from Paris, who also posts on the board, bounded over and enthusiastically clasped my hand. Then I saw none other than Ivan Halen, the organiser. That guy is Mr Suave! Also had a brief chat with Gilles. Told him to give us a shout out for the messageboarders who´d made it over. Grinning, he asked, "so which one are you then!?" Hadn´t actually had a chat with him before so he was most surprised when I explained who I was!! Had a brief chat about the bbc changes, I vented a lot of people´s disquiet. He looked very sympathetic but didn´t get a chance to discuss it. Also mentioned the football on 1st August. Well up for it but sounded doubtful about getting an all star team together in time. Such a top guy and it was a close call between him and Alex Jazzanova as to who stole the night. Gilles has been criticised for occasionally wobbly mixing over the years but here it was faultless. He closed the night with a tasty remix of Raul Midon´s "Sunshine" which was utterly, utterly beautiful at sunrise. Ibiza veterans will know exactly what I´m on about. Certain tunes are just designed for certain times and that was utterly wonderful.

From what I could see, the other Brownswooders all had a blinding time too (didn´t you Muji ! (wink) We met a few people from all over the place, a fair few Brits and a heavy contingent of Italians and glostick (!) wielding Spaniards too. A healthy percentage of people off their tits too! Saturday midday. I came to with a reeling head in the room with the defective door. The locksmith and Muji were engrossed in animated conversation outside. I went for a swim. The pool was excellent and then we had some lunch at a nearby cafe. Love the French ham (proper jambon) and baguettes. Everyone was incredibly friendly. Proper customer service. We were once again running late but managed to get to the festival in time for the final part of Ben Westbeech´s set. Wasn´t overly convinced myself. Remember commenting to the others that it did sound a bit like a poor man´s Jamiroquai. However, Sebastian Tellier who followed was absolute class. Sheer natural charisma. How this guy isn´t an international superstar is just astounding. He performed the first song with a cigarette stuck up his nose! and through the course of his set, performed pressups, made love to a rope, drank copious quantities of rose wine and played guitar, grand piano and micro Korg machine. The man is a star. The moment everyone was waiting for, La Ritournelle arrived and it was so joyous, so moving, so emotional. He played a few other tunes too and the final track of all which featured a grandpiano face off with a Korg machine techno thunderstorm was perhaps the most dramatic moment in a set full of unexpected sonic delights. I had a brief chat with M Tellier at the end and explained that there were a few fans of his on the board so hopefully he will make an appearance on here soon! It was the show of the weekend and I strongly urge everyone to see this guy live. After that, we headed down to town for a meal and found a lovely portside restaurant serving bistec et frites. The rose wine went down a storm. There was a funfair in the background, which was HUGELY tempting, but d_gubbins, in particular, was anxious not to miss the Soil & Pimp Sessions. So we made our way to the second festival site, again another stunning visual spectacle, not unlike a Greco-Roman amphitheatre from back in the day. We caught the end of Gonzales, another pianist who was performing crazy covers of MOR ´classics´, everything from Bee Gees to Queen. Decidedly underwhelming.. although some of the well oiled crowd were whooping up each sonic crime!

Then it was time for Soil & Pimp. The others were going wild, dancing on the stage and it certainly a frenetic performance. Technically excellent, though not my kinda music tto be honest, although I wasn´t bored for a minute. I was fairly intrigued by the showmanship of the frontman in the hat who was very amusing. There were lot of funny moments. The drummer lost his stick at one point and carried on regardless (!) and the saxophonist jumped into the crowd towards the end. Thought it was very funny when the main man in the hat addressed the crowd in a bizarre linguistic concoction of Japanese, English AND French. Nobody understood a word he was saying but everyone lapped it up regardless. The festival finished with a barnstorming set from Garfield, Sundae and Jazzanova along with one of the dudes from Bugz in the Attic. I still don´t feel Bugz music. I find it too cluttered, too hectic, I just can´t relate to it. Again, the evening blurs after about 2!! Followed a very similar script to the previous night but no less entertaining or enthralling. Sadly had to leave early to dash back to the hotel to meet the waiting taxi to take me to the station to reach the connecting train to Barcelona, though not before I tore my jeans to shreds trying to jump over a fence trying to get into the locked hotel! (don´t ask)It was sad to leave after a riproaring couple of days in the South of France. Big love and shouts to all the people there, Ben, Laura, Muji, Gilles P, Ivan Halen, J´Mirie, Kuni for sorting out the guestlist and others, all superstars and could well be persuaded to do this again. Everyone was incredibly friendly and enthusiastic throughout. Can´t wait for everyone else´s stories and the unedited photos!Right, I´m in Barca now and having a (relatively) quiet week. Anyone who wants any specific Barca tips, PM me during the week and I´ll see what I can find out.Have fun at Lovebox. See y´all on the other side.
